Operating for over five decades the Bundaberg District Women Veterans Club is all about camaraderie and vice-president Jenny Waldron welcomes servicewomen to get connected.

Tell us about the Bundaberg District Women Veterans?

We like to connect servicewomen or women veterans in camaraderie.

We have casual get togethers, more formal luncheons and then we have our commemorative events where we commemorate the service and sacrifice of nurses.

We look after the War Nurses Memorial Park and conduct the Anzac Day service day there. We also look after the Service Women’s Memorial in Lions Remembrance Park.

Other than that, the rest of it's just fun and camaraderie. We’re here for the wellbeing of servicewomen and their partners.

We enjoy bus trips out of the area, tenpin bowling and also line dancing as some of our extra activities.

Who can join the group?

Any ex-service woman who served in the Defence Force or is currently serving in the Defence Force, permanent or part time are welcome to join as a service member.

If you've got family members that you know of that are connected to service people, they can join us as associates. So husbands or partners can join in on our activities.

We've got about 67 members including our associates.

What significant events will happen during the year?

We're doing two Anzac Day functions. We do a little pre-Anzac Day function where we go to the Service Woman's Memorial and mark our tributes there.

We're leading the Anzac parade this year, which is wonderful. We're really thankful for the RSL and Council for inviting us.

On Anzac Day, of course it's all about the nurses and we conduct the whole service there for the community.

We also have our anniversary luncheon in July and will be celebrating our 57th anniversary.

Why is the group important to the Bundaberg Region?

It's about getting people connected because particularly some of the older ladies perhaps have lost family members and they're on their own for the first time in a long time. This is a great place to join in.

When and where do you meet?

We meet every third Monday of the month (except for when we have a special function) and we meet here in our meeting room at Four Glasgow Street, Svensson Heights. Meetings start at 1 pm.
